Remembering a Staten Island hero-Father Vincent Capodanno

Postby ssgmike » Sat Sep 02, 2006 3:35 pm

On Sunday-the 39th anniversary of the death of Father Vincent R. Capodanno-a mass will be offered in his memory in the chapel at Fort Wadsworth named after him.

The ordained Maryknoll missionary and U.S. Navy chaplan lost his life at the age of 38 on Labor Day 1967 during Operation Swift, a horrific battle in the Vietnam War. Father Capodanno was administering last rights to a Marine during combat in Qui Son Valley, Vietnam, when an enemy sniper opened fire, hitting him 27 times in the back, neck and head.

Father Capodanno's brother Jim Capodanno of Eltingville, recently received a telephone call from one of his brother's fellow Marines from Texas, who spoke of the impact Father Capodanno had on his life. Thirty-nine years later, he recalls their conversations.

The Marine will be among those at Sunday's memorial mass, which will concelebrated at 9 a.m. by Monsignor James Dorney, paster of St. Peter's R.C. Church, New Brighten, and several Maryknoll priests. He also plans to visit Father Capodanno's grave in St. Peter's Cemetary, West Brighten, where the priest is buried beside his parents.

Father Capodanno, who was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for his sacrific, recently was acknowledged as a servant of God---the first step on the road to sainthood.

Preceding the mass, the Marine Corps League Color Guard will give a presentation. The Father Vincent Capodanno Chapter of the Military Order of teh Purple Heart will present a wreath at the chapel monument, which depicts Father Capodanno administering last rites to a dying soldier.
